Beginning series on Baptism of the Holy Spirit – Part I

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN "FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT” OR "HAVING THE SPIRIT IN, WITHIN, INTO", OR "BEING MOVED BY THE SPIRIT' AND "BAPTISED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT'

DEFINITION OF "GHOST"

Holy Spirit is also called “Holy Ghost".  ‘Ghost’ is an Anglo-Saxon word which means “an inmate” or “an inhabitant” or “a guest”.  Thus, Holy Ghost is of the spiritual sense. A “spiritual inmate, or inhabitant or guest” capable of indwelling inside the human body of man.  James 2:26 says the body without the spirit is dead, become lifeless.

Old testament - "filled with the spirit” or "having the spirit in, within, into", or "being moved by the spirit' – God gave His Spirit to specific person or persons for specific task or purpose.

Moses ‑ Num 11:17, “Then I will come down and talk with you there. I will take of the Spirit that is upon you and will put the same upon them”.  Num 11:25, “Then the LORD came down in the cloud, and spoke to him, and took of the Spirit that was upon him, and placed the same upon the seventy elders; and it happened, when the Spirit rested upon them, that they prophesied, although they never did so again.” The Spirit of God was upon Moses, as the 70 elders were appointed, God took the Spirit that was on Moses and put on them – the 70 were anointed for specific task.

Joseph ‑ Gen 41:38, “And Pharaoh said to his servants, "Can we find such a one as this, a man in whom is the Spirit of God?" Pharaoh could see the presence of the Spirit of God in Joseph; Joseph was anointed by the Spirit for the specific purpose of saving His people from the severe famine.

Ezekiel ‑ Ezek 2:2, “Then the Spirit entered me when He spoke to me, and set me on my feet; and I heard Him who spoke to me.” (NKJV)  Ezek 3:24, “Then the Spirit entered me and set me on my feet, and spoke with me and said to me: "Go, shut yourself inside your house.” The Spirit of God in Ezekiel for his prophetic assignment.

Othniel ‑ Judges 3:10, “The Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel. He went out to war, and the LORD delivered Cushan-Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed over Cushan-Rishathaim.”  The Spirit of God was on Othniel to judge and lead His people.  So was Gideon in Judges 6:34, “But the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon; then he blew the trumpet, and the Abiezrites gathered behind him.”

Samson ‑ Judges 14:6, “And the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him, and he tore the lion apart as one would have torn apart a young goat, though he had nothing in his hand. But he did not tell his father or his mother what he had done.”

Judges 14:19, “Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon him mightily, and he went down to Ashkelon and killed thirty of their men, took their apparel, and gave the changes of clothing to those who had explained the riddle. So his anger was aroused, and he went back up to his father's house.” The Spirit of God came upon Samson to give him the extraordinary strength and power for the task.

David‑ 1 Sam 16:13, “Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward.” The Spirit God was upon David to lead His people as king.

The Messiah – Isa 11:2, “The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel and might, The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD.”  Isa 42:1, "Behold! My Servant whom I uphold, My Elect One in whom My soul delights! I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth justice to the Gentiles.”  Matt 3:16-17, “When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. 17 And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."”  Luke 4:18-19, "The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the broken hearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD."  (Isaiah 61:1-3)

These passages show clearly that even our Lord Jesus Christ, when He was on earth in His earthly ministry, He was no depending on His own human wisdom, power and strength, but on the Holy Spirit of God that rested upon Him.

THE DISCIPLES WERE FILLED AND HAD THE SPIRIT IN THEM 3 YEARS BEFORE THEY WERE BAPTISED WITH THE SPIRIT

Matt 10:1, “And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease.”  The disciples knew it was not by their own might and power that they drove out unclean spirits and healed sickness.

Matt 10:5-9, “These twelve Jesus sent out and commanded them, saying: "Do not go into the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter a city of the Samaritans.  But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.  And as you go, preach, saying, 'The kingdom of heaven is at hand.'  Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.  The disciples’ powers came entirely from the Spirit of God Christ imparted to them.  As in the days of Moses God took the Spirit that was in Moses and gave them to the 70 elders for the task they were called to do, so the Spirit of God that was on Jesus, Jesus gave the disciples that Spirit of God.

Matt 10:19-20, “But when they deliver you up, do not worry about how or what you should speak. For it will be given to you in that hour what you should speak;  for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.” The disciples’ ability to speak was given by the Spirit of God.  It was not according to their own wisdom or education or ability, some of them were fishermen.

JESUS CALLED UPON THE DISCIPLES TO WAIT FOR THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.

Acts 1:4-8

And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, "which," He said, "you have heard from Me;  for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now."  Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, "Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?" And He said to them, "It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority.  But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."

As John began with water baptism, Jesus spoke to the disciples that there would be a baptism with the Holy Spirit.  Jesus told them that He had to go and when He went, the Father will send the Holy Spirit of God to us.  After Jesus was resurrected, He asked the disciples to stay in Jerusalem, “don’t go away, and wait for the promise of the Father!” - the Promise of the baptism with the Holy Spirit.  What was/is the purpose of the baptism with the Holy Spirit?  Jesus said to them, and He says to us now too, that when the Holy Spirit comes upon us, we shall receive power, power to be His witnesses in Jerusalem, where we are now; in all Judeo, in Sabah; and Samaria, Malaysia; and to the end of the earth, to other nations.

What is the full implication of this promise of the Father?

Next week, we shall return and deal with the Baptism of the Holy Spirit Part II.
