Brief History of SIB
Borneo Evangelical Mission (“BEM”) was a multi-denominational Christian organization formed on 31 st August 1928 with the primary aim of bringing the Good News to the natives of the Island of Borneo. Missionaries sent by BEM mainly came from New South Wales trained in the Melbourne Bible Institute, Australia.
Amongst the earliest missionaries arrived at Borneo Island were Pastor Hudson Southwell, Pastor Carey Tolley and Pastor Frank Davision in November 1928 in Sarawak and began their missionary works in the District of Lawas.
In 1937, Pastor Stanford Young and Pastor Southwell extended BEM’s missionary works into the State of Sabah (known by then as British North Borneo) beginning at the District of Ranau. Their missionary works was later continued by S.H. Gollan and wife, Allan Belcher and Trevor White from England. Ranau became the mission centre for Sabah, from there, their missionary works extended to the District of Kota Belud, Tuaran and other Districts throughout Sabah.
BEM established the first Bible School in the District of Lawas in Sarawak in 1948. By 1950, BEM established local churches in the State of Sarawak and Sabah.
In 1959, BEM was replaced by its Bahasa Malaysia translated name of “Sidang Injil Borneo – SIB”. For details, please visit SIB official Website at:
